The Presbylite II™ bifocal is a translating design that has a SPHERICAL base curve so the design is fit like any spherical gas permeable lens. The fluorescein pattern should show an alignment fit. Corneas with more than 3 diopters of corneal cylinder are counter-indicated.

All the optics are on the front surface. The triangle segment contains the add power with the tip of the segment being aspheric for intermediate vision. The segment height is half of the diameter. The rest of the front optic zone is spherical and contains the distance power.

The design needs to center in the primary gaze for maximum distance acuity. The lens needs to translate up on downward gaze to get the add segment in front of the pupil. High riding lenses will not give acceptable distance acuity.

There are rotation marks on the lens. They should locate at 3 and 9 o’clock. Up to 30 degrees of nasal rotation is acceptable, but temporal rotation needs to have prism off-set to correct the problem. Use the patients spectacle add power. Base curves come on the .05 mm step only.

Presbylite II Bifocal by Ron Beerten and Al Vaske

The Presbylite II bifocal is the newest presbyopic design in North America. The lens is produced in Europe and is a very successful design there.

Figure 1 shows the unique design features of the Presbylite II. It most closely resembles a translating bifocal, but is really a hybrid design as the top 20% of the add segment is front aspheric  for intermediate vision. The triangle shaped segment can accommodate 30 degrees of nasal rotation without visual distortion.

What patients have commented on is the comfort of the lens and the high add power achieved with the Presbylite II.

The base curve is spherical and fit in an alignment manner. There is no corneal molding in this type of fitting as seen in many aspheric designs. Base toric design is also available.

The practitioner should choose the add power needed in spectacles for the Presbylite II. The design will deliver a true  high add of up to +3.50. The fitter does not have to order a higher than needed add power because aspherics do not deliver the whole high add power.

The lens must center to perform optimally. The original version tended to ride to high on many patients. The Presbylite II design has engineered improper positioning out. See Figure 2A and 2B for the difference between Presbylite I and II.

Fitting has been made easy through custom software available at no charge. Just fill the Ks, refraction and ad power and the software computes the fit. The warranty pricing insures a successful fit.

Menifocal Z

Lens Dynamics has completed a 100 patient study at 10 US sites of the new Menifocal Z © presbyopic contact lens. Patients have been extremely happy with the comfort and the vision at near, far and intermediate ranges. The practitioners report the lenses are easy to fit and satisfies patients demand even at high adds.menifocal z title
